Today we’re remembering rapper/singer Lisa Lopes from TLC who would have been 44 years old today. Lisa died in a car accident at age 30 while vacationing in the Honduras. It was reported that were 8 people in the car and she was the only casualty. Her cause of death was she lost control of the car and it rolled several times throwing her out the window and she died instantly of head trauma. Her publicist also said that at the time of the accident, she wasn’t licensed to drive internationally and was speeding which caused her to lose control. Also during the time of the accident Lisa’s sister was filming so there is footage of the accident.
Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to a seamstress and an Army Staff Sergeant. When Lisa was 10 years old her musical interests started with a gospel singing group with her two siblings. By the time she was 17 she was ready to start her music career. After hearing about a casting call for a new girl group from her boyfriend, she moved to Atlanta to audition. TLC was first called 2nd nature. Then it was renamed TLC, which is the initials of the first three members Tionne, Lisa and Crystal. Crystal ended up getting kicked out of the group so to keep the name TLC the girls’ had to have nicknames. Lisa went with “Left Eye” after a compliment from a guy who told her he was attracted to her because of her left eye. Lopes emphasized her nickname by wearing a pair of sunglasses with the left lens covered with a condom, in keeping with the group’s promotion of safe sex. With 4 singles on their album “Ooooooh… On the TLC Tip” they sold six million copies, becoming a household name. After the feuding album FanMail Lopes expanded her solo being featured in chart toppers like Spice Girl Melanie C’s “Never Be the Same Again”
Lisa Lopes left a legacy of being one of the most outspoken and controversial female rap artist of all time.
